KNOWN BACKGROUND:

Many years ago, before the Known World abandoned warfare—and even before the convention banning the use of alchemy in combat, the Barbarian Lands were divided among dozens of small clans locked in constant war. Occasionally, they joined forces for a raid into the Western Lands, but mostly they fought one another.
The Sarsum tribe possessed the secret of creating soldiers from mud, and they might well have conquered the North if their enemies hadn’t discovered a way to stop them. It was remarkably simple. The enemy alchemists sent rain, followed by freezing winds, over the Sarsum lands until everything was covered in a thick layer of ice. No soil, no golems. Desperate, the Sarsums began searching frantically for mud. Their luck finally turned at the bottom of a deep cave, where they found enough clay for exactly two bodies. In their haste, they divided the ingredients unevenly, but the golems turned out beautifully. They named them Salis and Silas. Their task was simple: Kill all the enemies.
Salis charged like a fury and immediately began crushing everything in his path. Silas, however, simply stood there smiling.
“Come on!” the alchemists urged him. “Go fight!”
“Is that so?” Silas scratched his head. “Wait a minute… If I go out there, they might kill me, right?”
“That is your job! Go!”
“Maybe I’ll kill them instead…” Silas continued thoughtfully, paying no attention to them. “But if I kill them all, I’ll have completed my task and turn to dust. Right? I know. I knooow.”
The alchemists exchanged glances.
“According to your plan, I’m going to die either way.” Then Silas raised his voice.
“And whoever wants me dead… is my enemy!”
The alchemists began slipping away, muttering among themselves.
“And what exactly was my task?” Silas shouted after them. But there was no one left to answer.
Silas sat down on the ice and began drawing strange runes.

To be continued.
