KNOWN BACKGROUND:
“Boba! Come on, up you get! You’ve been asleep for nineteen hours. Even for you…”
“Ugh, muuum… I had the most interesting dream… I was riding a great blue dragon, and…”
“I’ve promised you, Boba: we’ll go to the Celestial School someday. But it’s not that simple, you know.”
“But there’s a high-speed railway now! We’d be there in no time.”
“I’ve already told you,” she cut in. “I’m working on it. There’s a queue for the train, and it won’t take us all the way there anyway. After that it’s the long walk — through snow and ice. And you, the way you are…” She didn’t finish. Instead she booped him lightly on the nose, glanced at her watch, and smiled. “Tell me about the dream!”
“Oh, it was AMAZING!” Boba perked up. “First of all — the graphics!” — he raised a finger dramatically — “nothing like the illustrations or the films we’ve seen. The dragon was sweeeet. Second of all” — he went on, deadly serious — “she wasn’t a he at all. I was lost in a snowy mountain. Everywhere I looked: white. I was scared. And then She appeared! First as a tiny blue dot, and then…” His mother glanced at her watch again. “Got it, mom… Wait, just the best part! She agreed to let me ride on her back,” Boba rushed on. “We flew over the whole Known World! I touched the tips of the Academia’s towers, felt the heat of the Cannibal Isle, dove under the elegant bridges of the West! Incredible! And you know what we were doing?”
“What?” asked his mother, a little bored, but still smiling.
“MISCHIEF!” Boba grinned. “First we set fire to King Longbeard’s entire warehouse of exotic alcohol. Explosions, and smoke in every color imaginable. Beautiful! Then we wrote a letter proving that the Emperor is actually a donkey, and dropped it on some gossip ladies at the Academia. Ha-ha!” His mother began to look nervous.
“Wait! The best part! She somehow rotated the constellations — can you imagine! — and a whole fleet of ships got lost!” Boba giggled. His mother stroked his head and smiled.
“You’re quite the dreamer, my boy.”
