KNOWN BACKGROUND:
Henrietta has always relied on luck with sincere, unshakable faith. And luck has never once betrayed her. She often replayed—or told her friends about—the story of how she met Mr. Brassfeather. It was pure chance that she had been sent to serve at the reception King Longbeard had organized in honor of the wealthy merchant. It was also pure luck that she tripped and covered the magnificently dressed Mr. Brassfeather from head to toe in garlic sauce. The rest is known to every gossip in the Known World: how the sparks in his eyes passed from anger, through surprise, and settled on love; what a lavish wedding followed; and so on, and so on.
In Henrietta’s earlier dreams, her married name would have been Highfeather. But Brassfeather was good enough too — to a true believer in luck, such details are insignificant.
The chain of happy coincidences did not stop there. On the very first day after moving into her husband’s estate in the lands of Academia, she met Countess Gulugula. Intelligent and erudite, the Countess helped Henrietta make sense of this strange new world. The many stories her husband brought home from his travels gained logic and depth when supplemented by the Countess’s vast knowledge.
Luck clearly did love Henrietta. Years earlier, before she had even broken out of her hard shell, Master Chef Muffin had been visiting relatives in the People’s Union. The kitchen was in unimaginable chaos. Someone had stuffed a crate of eggs into a cupboard near the great oven, accidentally creating perfect incubator conditions. And so Henrietta came into the world. Her life was a gift. Without luck, it would have ended before it had even begun – as part of Longbeard’s breakfast.
